Tap the token board to request a token

When to use this goal

For young students on a token system who wait passively or escalate when tokens are missed, and who can point to a picture. Fit depends on the reinforcement plan and communication present levels, not age.

Baseline
Withhold the token for a few seconds after a finished step on 10 planned steps and record whether the student asked, waited, or reacted with problem behavior. Make sure the student values the backup item.
Tips
Give the token right away when asked. This turns the token board into a communication tool. Fade the highlighted spot. A short delay now and then gives natural chances to ask.
Limits
Asking may become prompt-dependent if adults always pause; vary it. Not a fit for students who do not yet understand the token system.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during table work with a token board on the table after finishing a step, the student will point to or tap the token board to ask for a token after finishing a step independently in at least 7 of 10 opportunities, on 3 consecutive data collection days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected 10 finished steps per day.

Baseline: 1 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?
