Make positive bids for peer attention in groups
When to use this goal
For students whose FBA shows they seek peer attention through teasing, provoking, or disrupting, and who have few positive ways to get it. Fit depends on the FBA and group-work observation, not grade. Positive bids include comments on the work, compliments, and offers to help.
- Baseline
- Count positive and negative bids for peer attention during five group tasks. Note how peers respond to each; if peers ignore positive bids, the group needs coaching too.
- Tips
- Teach a few comment types and practice them; a student who only knows teasing needs models. Praise positive bids quietly. Pair with a reduction goal (bh-rep-049 or bh-rep-005) when negative bids are counted.
- Limits
- Counts bids, not whether peers respond warmly. Social skill instruction may be needed in the social-emotional area.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 20-minute cooperative group task with three or four peers, the student will make a positive bid for peer attention (a comment on the work, a compliment, or an offer to help) independently at least 4 times per 20-minute group task, on 4 of 5 observed group tasks, as measured by frequency recording collected one group task daily.
Baseline: 1 times per 20-minute group task.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 20-minute group task.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
