Offer a trade to get a peer's item

K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who grab items from peers, and whose FBA shows access to those items. Fit depends on the FBA and on play and language present levels, not grade. A trade gives the peer a reason to say yes.

Baseline
Record five times the student wanted a peer's item: grabbed, asked, traded, or waited. Note which items; duplicates of the most wanted items can reduce conflicts while the skill is taught.
Tips
Coach peers to answer kindly, yes or no. When the peer says no, the student needs a next step (waiting, another item), so pair with bh-rep-016. Praise the offer whatever the answer.
Limits
Depends on peers; a refused trade is still a success for the student. Grabbing out of adult view is not counted.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during free play or centers when a peer has an item the student wants, the student will offer a trade ("want to trade?" while holding out another item) and accept the peer's answer independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by direct observation collected during free play or centers daily.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
