Use the replacement request in every class
When to use this goal
For students who use their replacement request (a break, help, or space request) with one teacher or in one room but not in others, where the problem behavior continues. Fit depends on data by setting, not grade. All staff must know and honor the request.
- Baseline
- List the student's settings and record one precursor episode in each over a week: did the student use the request there? The gaps show where staff training or practice is needed.
- Tips
- Give every adult a one-page summary of the request and how to honor it. Practice the request in each new room with the teacher. Generalization usually fails because a setting does not honor the request, not because the student forgets.
- Limits
- Requires data from many staff; keep the recording simple (a tally on a card). Some settings may need a different request form.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, across the class periods of the school day when a precursor named in the plan appears, the student will use the taught replacement request when a precursor appears independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by direct observation collected one precursor episode per setting per week.
Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Replacement Behaviors.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
