Wait at the door or curb until the adult gives the go signal
When to use this goal
For students who push through doors, run into the parking lot, or step off the curb before the adult. Base the choice on counting door and curb crossings with and without waiting. Street crossing itself is in community-safety.
- Baseline
- Record the first 10 doors and curbs across a few days: waited for the signal, went after a verbal reminder, or went without waiting. Mark the waiting spots with tape or paint before collecting data so the expectation is visible.
- Tips
- The target is every opportunity because a curb or parking lot is not a place for 80%. Teach with interior doors first, then exterior doors, then curbs. Make the wait short and the signal clear. Until the goal is met, an adult stays between the student and the exterior door or street.
- Limits
- A 10 of 10 target can take many weeks; report progress as the number of consecutive weeks met. Does not cover crossing the street itself.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the group reaches an exterior door, the bus loading area, or a curb during a walk, the student will stop at the marked waiting spot and wait for the adult's go signal before crossing or going through independently in 10 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly data summaries, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily, each door or curb, summarized weekly.

When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
