Keep hands and feet to self on the bus ride
When to use this goal
For students whose bus referrals are for poking, kicking seats, or grabbing peers' belongings. Scores each ride as an opportunity, with the driver or aide collecting data. Base the choice on bus referrals and a week of aide tallies. The full bus routine is bh-saf-019.
- Baseline
- Ask the aide to mark 5 rides: no contact, contact once, or contact more than once, with the peer and the seat noted. Most contact happens with a specific peer or in a crowded row; a seat change is often the first fix. Note ride length; a 45-minute ride is a harder target than a 10-minute one.
- Tips
- Seat assignment and a lap item do most of the work. Reinforce at school from the aide's note. Transportation staff need the plan in writing and a sheet that takes seconds. The sample target is 4 of 5 rides, not 5 of 5: a 100% bar on whole rides is punitive for a young student and makes sufficient progress almost impossible to report; 100% is reserved for imminent-danger safety goals. Pair with bh-saf-016 (contact reduction, for example no more than 1 contact per ride) if contacts are frequent, and with following-adult-directions bh-dir-025 for the driver's directions.
- Limits
- The driver cannot observe closely; data need an aide or a chaperone. A whole-ride score is all-or-nothing; a count per ride shows progress sooner for students with many contacts.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
