Report threatening messages online to an adult

When to use this goal

For students who get threatening, harassing, or pressuring messages or posts (including threats from peers or requests for photos) and reply, forward them, or keep them to themselves. Fit depends on device use and the student's understanding, not grade. Practice uses scenarios; real cases follow school and family protocols.

Baseline
Write five scenarios that match the apps the student actually uses. Score the four steps: no reply, screenshot, block, and tell. Ask the family what devices and apps are in use and whether there is a family plan already.
Tips
Requests for photos are a safety issue, not a dating issue; include them in scenarios. Never shame the student for what they received. Real threats go through the school protocol and may involve police; the student must know that reporting never gets them in trouble.
Limits
Scenario answers may not predict real behavior. The goal does not cover the student's own posting, which belongs in a digital citizenship goal.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when presented with a scenario of a threatening or pressuring message or post from a peer, the student will say they would not reply, take a screenshot, block the sender if needed, and show it to a trusted adult independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 2 consecutive monthly scenario sets, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected five scenarios once a month, plus any real reports.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Safety Behaviors.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
