Say a refusal statement in role-play

6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For middle school students who go along with peers or freeze when offered something in prevention role-plays. Present levels, not grade, decide fit. Students who use AAC can store refusal messages.

Baseline
Run five short role-plays and note what the student said or did. Ask which refusal words sound like them; statements they choose are more likely to be used.
Tips
Each role-play offer is one opportunity. Use pretend items or cards, never real products. Practice with different peers so the skill does not depend on one partner.
Limits
Role-play results may not carry over to real pressure. Does not address current use, which the counselor and family address.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during health class role-plays in which a peer offers a vape, cigarette, alcohol, or pills, the student will give a clear refusal statement, such as no thanks, I do not vape, and add a reason or a change of subject independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 3 of 4 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly during the unit, then monthly.
