Tell one observation about a natural object

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For preschool students who handle shells, leaves, rocks or water play materials but do not yet say or show anything about them when asked. Present levels in expressive language and play decide fit; grade level does not.

Baseline
Offer five objects over a week at the discovery table and ask the same open question each time (what do you notice). Record the exact response and whether it names a property (bumpy, big, blue) or only names the object (rock). Only property responses count toward the goal.
Tips
Keep a small basket of real objects with clear differences in texture and size. Accept any language or communication mode; the goal is noticing and telling, not English vocabulary. Families can practice with objects found on a walk.
Limits
Measures noticing one property, not comparing or describing several. Responses depend on interest in the object, so rotate materials. A student who is new to the classroom may need time to warm up before data are reliable.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a science table or discovery center activity with a natural object such as a leaf, shell or rock, the student will tell or show one color, size, shape or texture they notice on the object independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Science Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
