Ask a testable question about an observation
When to use this goal
For students who ask questions that cannot be tested in class (why is the sky blue) or ask none at all when invited to plan an investigation. Present levels in asking wh- questions in conversation decide fit.
- Baseline
- Record every question the student asks during five question times and code each as testable, not testable, or not a question. Students who ask none need the stem more than students who ask many untestable ones.
- Tips
- Accept spoken, written or AAC questions. Testable means the class could actually test it with the materials, so share the materials list. Asking the question is the target; the class need not test every one.
- Limits
- Question times may be rare in some science classes; plan them with the teacher. Coding questions as testable takes judgment, so agree on examples before collecting data.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, after observing a demonstration or a set of objects during science, when the teacher invites questions to test, the student will ask or write a question that can be answered by changing one thing and measuring or observing the result independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 5 consecutive science lessons with question time, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.
Baseline: 0 of 5 opportunities.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Science Skills.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
