Write an argument from lab data without frames

When to use this goal

For students who write CER responses with frames but stall or leave out reasoning when the frame is removed. Present levels on a framed CER rubric near criterion show readiness.

Baseline
Score two or three unframed responses. If the evidence row is low because the student cannot read the graph, address data reading first (ca-sci-026).
Tips
Use the science teacher's lab questions so this adds no extra work. The checklist names the parts but gives no words, which is the step after frames. Score a sample with the co-teacher to agree on the reasoning row.
Limits
Reasoning quality depends on content knowledge, which varies by unit. The goal is about written argument, not about designing or running the lab.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, after a lab, given the investigation question and a data table or graph from the class results, the student will write a claim, at least two pieces of evidence with numbers from the data, and reasoning that connects the evidence to a science idea from the unit independently, earning a score of at least 9 out of 12 on a 4-row argument rubric scored 0 to 3 per row, on 3 of 4 consecutive scored lab responses, as measured by a defined scoring rubric collected every two weeks.

Baseline: 5 out of 12 rubric points.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Rubric score fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Rubric scoring gives rubric score data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Science Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
