Share a source-backed point in a class discussion

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who are silent in social studies discussions, or who share opinions with no link to the texts. Present levels in oral language and in finding evidence in a text decide fit.

Baseline
Observe five discussions and record each time the student speaks and whether a source is named. One opportunity is one discussion; count it when at least one source-backed point is shared.
Tips
Prep sheets lower the barrier for students who need time to plan. Students who use AAC can share a prepared point on their device. Pair with a self-advocacy goal if speaking anxiety is the barrier.
Limits
Discussion formats vary by teacher; agree on which discussions count. The goal does not score the quality of the argument.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a structured class discussion about a social studies question, after reading the assigned sources, the student will state a point about the question and name the source and detail that support it independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 5 consecutive discussions, as measured by direct observation collected at each structured discussion.
