Finish assigned work before choosing a free-time activity

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who move to free-choice activities with work still unfinished. Needs a class routine where free time follows work.

Baseline
For a week, note at the start of free time whether the student's work was finished and turned in, or whether they moved to choice with work left. Check that the work was at the independent level; a student who cannot finish should not be held from free time as a test.
Tips
Each work-then-choice block is one opportunity. Met means the work is complete (every item attempted) and in the turn-in spot before the student starts an activity. The done-then-choose card lists a quick check: all items, name, tray.
Limits
Only works where free-choice time exists. Students may rush the work to get to choice; monitor accuracy. Does not fit when free time is scheduled regardless of work.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when free-choice time is available after assigned work, the student will check that the assigned work is finished and turned in before starting a free-choice activity independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected daily and summarized weekly.
