Take notes or respond at lesson checkpoints
When to use this goal
For middle and high school students whose present levels show drifting during teacher-led lessons in content classes, such as doodling, resting the head down, or using the device for other things. Use when lessons are long enough for 10 spaced checks. Present levels and the class format, not grade, decide the target.
- Baseline
- Space 10 checks across the lesson (every 4 minutes in a 40-minute lesson) and score each instant against the written definition. Collect at least five lessons and note the lesson format, since lectures, discussions, and video segments often give different results.
- Tips
- A co-teacher or paraprofessional can collect data discreetly from across the room with a vibrating timer. Do not count looking toward the front alone as engaged; the definition names an action in the student's own materials. Share the percentage with the student weekly so they can set their own target for the next week.
- Limits
- Momentary checks miss short drifts between signals. Some students listen while looking away or doodling; if comprehension checks are strong, rewrite the definition with the student rather than counting those moments against them.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 40-minute teacher-led lesson in a content-area class scored at 10 momentary time-sampling checks, the student will be engaged in the lesson by writing notes, following the text or slides in their own materials, answering, or doing the posted task independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed class periods, as measured by direct observation collected twice per week.
Baseline: 4 of 10 opportunities.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
