Answer and use materials during small group
When to use this goal
For young students whose present levels show drifting during short teacher-led groups, such as turning away, leaving the table, or handling unrelated items. Small groups at the table give a natural, short observation window. Present levels and the group's length, not grade, decide the target.
- Baseline
- In a 10-minute group, mark engaged or not at six moments (about every 100 seconds), using a vibrating timer. Record at least five groups and note the group content and time of day. A second adult can collect so the group leader keeps teaching.
- Tips
- Engaged includes taking part in the student's usual way: speech, signs, a device, pointing, or handling the material. Sitting quietly without responding is scored by what the student is doing with the materials, not by stillness. Movement in the seat or a wiggle cushion is fine.
- Limits
- Six checks is a small sample; look at the weekly trend. The group leader's pacing and materials strongly affect young children's engagement, so record any changes.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 10-minute teacher-led small group at the table scored at 6 momentary time-sampling checks, the student will be engaged in the group activity by answering, pointing to or handling the group materials, or repeating with the group independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed groups, as measured by direct observation collected three times per week.

- Record up to 6 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
