Reduce opening unrelated apps during online class
When to use this goal
For students in live online or device-heavy classes whose present levels show frequent switching to games, video sites, or social apps during instruction. Use with a replacement plan: a planned break, a site blocker, or notes to open instead. Present levels decide the target.
- Baseline
- Use the classroom device-management view, the platform's activity report, or a discreet tally to count each switch to an unrelated window. Collect at least five classes. Note what was happening at each switch (independent work, teacher talk, a wait time); switches often cluster in wait times.
- Tips
- Count each opening once, however long it stays open. Teach the replacement first: the planned break, a notes page, or asking a question. Review the count privately with the student and let them set the next week's target. Pair with ef-att-027 or ef-att-028 for the engagement side.
- Limits
- Device logs can miss a phone used under the desk; note it separately. A drop in app switching shows less distraction, not more learning.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a 45-minute live online class, the student will reduce opening unrelated tabs, apps, or sites during instruction (not counting course tools, notes, or a scheduled break) to no more than 2 times per 45-minute class, with a self-chosen site blocker during instruction, in 4 of 5 consecutive classes, as measured by frequency recording collected each observed class and summarized weekly.
Baseline: 9 times per 45-minute class.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sustained Attention & Task Engagement.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Count each occurrence of the defined behavior per 45-minute class.
- Keep the observation length the same each session. If it varies, compare rate per minute, not raw counts.
- Write the behavior definition at the top of the sheet so all data collectors count the same thing.
