Use math manipulatives for a full center

K-2, PKDurationTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students whose present levels show manipulatives turning into building or tossing within a minute or two of a math center starting. The math task must be one the student can do with the materials. Present levels decide the starting minutes.

Baseline
Time from the center start to the first minute of building, tossing, or leaving the materials. Collect at least five centers with different manipulatives and note which ones hold attention longest.
Tips
A short free-exploration minute with the materials before the task often lengthens task time. Work mats keep materials contained without removing them. Accept answers by pointing, speech, or device.
Limits
Measures persistence with the materials, not math accuracy. Novel manipulatives draw play the first few times; use familiar ones for data.

Criterion

How long a behavior lasts, from a defined start to a defined end.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

The length of time a behavior lasts is timed from a defined start to a defined end.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 15-minute math center with manipulatives and a task card, the student will use the manipulatives for the math task on the card by counting, building, matching, or showing an answer independently for at least 10 minutes, on 4 of 5 observed centers, as measured by duration recording collected three times per week.

Baseline: 2 minutes.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Duration recording gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sustained Attention & Task Engagement.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
