Complete planned focus sprints during homework

9-12, 6-8OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For high school students whose present levels show long homework or study sessions with little done, who can plan but lose focus partway. The student sets the sprint length (often 15 to 25 minutes) and break length. Present levels decide the target.

Baseline
Over one week, have the student log each planned sprint and whether it ran its full length; observe at least two study hall sprints to confirm the log. Score the first 10 planned sprints of the week.
Tips
A sprint is complete when the student worked through the full time on the planned task; a quick task-related question does not break it. The student chooses the timer tool. Use the log to adjust sprint length, not to judge effort.
Limits
Home sprints are self-reported; weigh in-school observations more. Does not measure how much work each sprint produces; add a product count if needed.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a study hall or homework period with a sprint plan written at the start, the student will keep working on the planned task for the full sprint, starting the break only when the sprint timer ends, and mark the sprint on the sprint log independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected weekly from the sprint log, with in-person checks in study hall.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sustained Attention & Task Engagement.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
