Remain with the group on a community trip

9-12, 6-8DurationTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For transition-age students with significant support needs whose present levels show wandering away from the group or the task during community-based instruction (store, library, recreation center). Safety comes first: the adult plan for supervision does not change with this goal. Present levels decide the target.

Baseline
Time from arrival to the first stop of more than 2 minutes in the assigned task or the first move away from the group. Collect at least three trips at familiar sites. Note crowding, noise, and the task assigned.
Tips
Use age-matched tasks that adults do: shopping, returning library books, ordering food. Stopping to ask a store worker a question counts as the task. Supervision follows the safety plan regardless of progress on this goal.
Limits
This goal does not replace a safety or elopement plan. Community settings change from trip to trip; compare similar trips.

How long a behavior lasts, from a defined start to a defined end.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a community-based instruction trip to a store with an assigned shopping task, the student will remain with the group and carry out the assigned trip task, such as holding the list, finding items, or paying independently for at least 25 minutes, across 3 consecutive community trips, as measured by direct observation collected on each community trip.

Baseline: 5 minutes.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Duration fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives duration data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Sustained Attention & Task Engagement.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
