Choose another center when the first choice is full

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For children who stand at a full center, protest, or push in rather than choosing another. Fits center-based classrooms with a visible full signal.

Baseline
Record what the child does when a chosen center is full over a week. Confirm the full signal is clear to the child (a stop sign, a name-card limit) and that other centers are open and reachable.
Tips
Each full-center moment is one opportunity. Met means a different open center is chosen and used within 1 minute. Teach a phrase (it is full, I will pick another) and a waiting-list option if the room uses one; using the waiting list and choosing another center both count.
Limits
If the same center is always full, the fix may be the room setup. Choosing another center does not mean the child engages there; see attention goals.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when the chosen center shows the full signal during free-choice time, the student will choose a different open center and begin using its materials within 1 minute independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected daily during centers and summarized weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Cognitive Flexibility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
