Offer an alternative or ask later after being told no

When to use this goal

For students whose present levels show a no from an adult leads to repeated asking, arguing, or shutdown. Fits any setting. The student should have the language for a short request.

Baseline
Record the next several no responses and what the student did (accepted, re-asked, argued, shut down). Count re-asks per no; that number is often the clearest baseline.
Tips
Each no is one opportunity. Met means at most one alternative or one ask-later question, followed by continuing the activity without further requests. Adults should answer the alternative honestly so the strategy works. Teach and role-play the card phrases when calm.
Limits
Adults who sometimes give in after repeated asking make the goal impossible; the team must be consistent. Shutdown may need a regulation goal instead.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when an adult says no to a request during class, the student will accept the answer and either propose one alternative or ask when they can ask again, then continue the activity independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected each no and summarized weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Cognitive Flexibility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
