Combine own and a peer's project ideas

When to use this goal

For students who push for their own plan in group projects and stop contributing when the group picks another idea. Fits classes with regular group work. Present levels decide group size and whether roles are assigned.

Baseline
Observe three or four group sessions and record each time a peer's idea conflicted with the student's. Note what the student did: argued, withdrew, took over, or adjusted. That pattern decides which replacement to teach first.
Tips
Each conflicting idea is one opportunity; met means the student names a usable part and offers to combine, or agrees to try the other idea and keeps working. Disagreeing politely and giving a reason also counts when followed by a group decision the student accepts.
Limits
Peers' behavior shapes the opportunities; some groups rarely disagree. Measures responses to ideas, not the quality of the final project.

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a group project planning session, when a peer suggests an idea different from the student's, the student will agree to try the peer's idea first or suggest a way to combine part of it with their own idea independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during group work.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Cognitive Flexibility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
