Name a Plan B before a planned event
When to use this goal
For students who are thrown by changes to events they have been looking forward to (a field trip, a game, a club meeting) and who can talk about the future in simple terms. Present levels decide whether the plan is spoken, written, or picture-based.
- Baseline
- Ask about five upcoming events across two weeks and record whether the student can name a possible change and a backup plan. If they can, note whether the plan helped when a real change came.
- Tips
- Each event discussed is one opportunity; met means a possible change and an acceptable backup are named. Write the Plan B on the student's schedule or phone so it is ready if the change happens. Track real changes as well, since the plan is only useful if it is used.
- Limits
- Naming a backup in calm moments does not guarantee using it when upset. Some students may grow more anxious when changes are discussed; watch for that and adjust.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, during a morning check-in, when an upcoming event could change (weather, a canceled bus, an absent leader), the student will name what could change about the event and state or write one acceptable backup plan independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 4 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Cognitive Flexibility.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
