Change search terms when results are not useful

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who type the same search over and over, or give up, when online research returns nothing useful. Fits research projects. Present levels decide whether the student uses a school database, a search engine, or a library catalog.

Baseline
Watch two research sessions and note each dead-end search and what the student did next. A search log (the student writes each search) also gives permanent-product data with little extra work.
Tips
Each dead-end search is one opportunity; met means a new search that differs in words or source. Retyping the same words with a typo fix does not count. The search log doubles as the data sheet.
Limits
Measures search flexibility, not judgment of source quality. Different databases behave differently; keep conditions steady.

How the goal refers to the student

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during an online research task, when a search returns no results that fit the question, the student will try a new search with different key words, a synonym, a broader or narrower term, or a different source, and record the new search independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 2 consecutive research projects, as measured by direct observation collected weekly during research units.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Cognitive Flexibility.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
