Follow multi-step directions with a safety step in active classes

When to use this goal

For students whose present levels show missed steps in PE, science labs, art, or career-technical classes, where a skipped step can be unsafe. For students who manage directions in seated classes.

Baseline
Ask the activity teacher to record, for each set of directions over two weeks, whether the student completed all steps and whether the safety step was done. Note whether errors happen more in noisy or high-movement settings.
Tips
Each multi-step direction is one opportunity. Met means all steps in order with the safety step done before the activity starts. Safety step omissions are always scored not met even if everything else is right. Teachers may pause the student before the activity if safety requires it; score it as prompted.
Limits
Active settings make observation hard; the activity teacher's record is the data source. Noise and movement affect listening; consider the setting when interpreting.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

When or under what conditions

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when given a three- to four-step oral direction in a lab, shop, art room, or gym that includes a safety step, the student will complete every step in order, including the safety step, before beginning the activity independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected each activity session and summarized weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Following Multi-Step Directions.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
