Reduce the number of individual repetitions needed per class period

When to use this goal

For students whose present levels show the teacher re-explaining every direction individually after the class has started. Fits general education classes where one number per period is easier to collect than per-direction data. Present levels decide the target.

Baseline
Ask the teacher to tally individual repetitions for one week, and to count the number of multi-step directions given, so the team can see the ratio. Agree on what counts as a repetition (restating any part of the direction to this student).
Tips
Count each time an adult repeats or re-explains a direction to the student individually. Student-requested repetitions count too, but note them separately; asking is a good strategy and the aim is to need it less, not to stop asking. Keep the number of directions per period similar.
Limits
Counts depend on how many directions are given and on the teacher's habit of re-explaining. A low count can mean the student stopped asking and is guessing; pair with a direction-following accuracy measure.

Criterion

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 45-minute class period with several multi-step directions, the student will reduce individual repetitions of directions by an adult to no more than 1 time per 45-minute class period, while using a listen-and-write strategy for each direction, on 4 of 5 consecutive observed periods, as measured by frequency recording collected daily in one selected class.

Baseline: 6 times per 45-minute class period.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Following Multi-Step Directions.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
