Choose the right branch in a work procedure

When to use this goal

For transition-age students at job sites or in career-tech classes whose procedures include checks (if the tray is full, take it to the back; if the light is red, call the supervisor). The routine part of the job should be learned. Present levels at the site, not grade, decide fit.

Baseline
The job coach lists the check points in the procedure and records, for one or two shifts, whether the student made the check and chose the right next step. Note checks the student skips entirely.
Tips
Safety checks (a red light, a spill, a broken guard) are always taught directly and must be met every time; if a check is about safety, set the target to every opportunity. Photo results fade to words as the student learns them.
Limits
Real check points may be rare in a shift; staged checks can add practice. This goal does not replace supervision for safety-critical steps.

Skill

What the student will do

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Condition

When or under what conditions

Support

Support allowed

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

An adult observes and records the defined behavior during a specified activity.

How often data are collected
Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at a work-based learning site when a step in the posted procedure depends on a check (full or empty, on or off, damaged or not), the student will do the check named in the procedure and carry out the step for the result found independently in at least 7 of 8 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of shifts, as measured by direct observation collected each shift, summarized weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Following Multi-Step Directions.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
