Hold a my-turn-next card for a shared item

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For preschool students who grab a shared item (the favorite truck, the swing, the tablet) as soon as they want it. Present levels decide fit. The card gives the student something to do with the urge: hold it until the turn comes.

Baseline
Record 5 or more times the student wanted an item a peer had: grabbed, protested, or waited, and how long the peer's turn lasted. Write an operational definition first (what counts as the impulsive response and what counts as using the strategy), and teach and practice the strategy before measuring it.
Tips
Keep peer turns short at first so waiting pays off quickly. Hand the item over as soon as the turn ends. Score an opportunity as met when the student held the card and did not grab.
Limits
Peers' turn lengths vary; adults keep them fair. Does not measure sharing their own item.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during free play, when another child is using an item the student wants, the student will take the my-turn-next card and hold it until the other child's turn ends independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily during free play.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Impulse Control & Inhibition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)
