Wait for the go signal at snack

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For preschool students who dig into snack or art materials before everyone is ready, spilling or taking more than their share. Present levels decide fit. A clear go signal and a hands-on-the-mat spot give the student a way to wait.

Baseline
Record 5 or more snack or art starts: whether the student waited for the signal and how long the wait was. Write an operational definition first (what counts as the impulsive response and what counts as using the strategy), and teach and practice the strategy before measuring it.
Tips
Keep the wait short (a few seconds at first). Score each start as one opportunity. The mat gives the hands a job; it is not a restraint.
Limits
Wait length drives success; record it. Does not cover safety waits at doors and streets (safety-behavior).

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at snack time, when food is set out before the go signal, the student will keep hands on their mat or in their lap until the adult gives the go signal independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 consecutive school days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily at snack or art.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Impulse Control & Inhibition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
