Wait for the answer signal before responding

When to use this goal

For primary students who shout an answer before the question is finished, which cuts off thinking time for themselves and others. Present levels decide fit. The class uses a think-time signal (such as "thumbs on chest" when ready, then "show me"); hand raising is a separate classroom-expectations goal.

Baseline
In one lesson a day for a week, count questions asked to the group and how many the student answered before the think time ended. Write an operational definition first (what counts as the impulsive response and what counts as using the strategy), and teach and practice the strategy before measuring it.
Tips
Count each group question as one opportunity. Give the student plenty of chances to answer so waiting pays off. A whole-class signal avoids singling them out.
Limits
The teacher's pacing changes the number of opportunities; keep the lesson type steady while measuring.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during whole-group questions with a think-time signal, the student will hold their answer through the think time, show the ready signal, and answer when the teacher says "show me" or calls on them independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by frequency recording collected during one 20-minute lesson a day, four days a week.

Baseline: 3 of 10 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Impulse Control & Inhibition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
