Wait for own turn before touching game pieces

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For primary students who move other players' pieces, roll out of turn, or grab the spinner in games, so peers stop wanting to play. Present levels decide fit. A turn marker shows whose turn it is.

Baseline
In 2 or 3 games, record each other-player turn and whether the student touched the shared pieces during it. Write an operational definition first (what counts as the impulsive response and what counts as using the strategy), and teach and practice the strategy before measuring it.
Tips
Count each other-player turn as one opportunity. Quick-turn games are easier at first. Fidget items for the hands during waits are fine.
Limits
Game type changes difficulty; keep it steady while measuring.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Criterion wording

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

Mastery rule

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a small-group board or card game with a turn marker, the student will keep their hands off the shared pieces until the turn marker is in front of them independently in at least 9 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive game sessions, as measured by frequency recording collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 4 of 10 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Impulse Control & Inhibition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
