Show a need card before leaving the seat

When to use this goal

For primary and upper elementary students who jump up to sharpen pencils, get supplies, or visit a friend whenever the thought comes. Present levels decide fit. The card lets the student signal a need; planned movement breaks are separate and always allowed.

Baseline
In one work period a day for a week, count times the student got up and whether they signaled first. Note why they got up. Write an operational definition first (what counts as the impulsive response and what counts as using the strategy), and teach and practice the strategy before measuring it. Look at when and why the impulsive response happens (excitement, wanting a turn, wanting to be first, avoiding a wait) and adjust the setting too: shorter waits, more turns, and quick acknowledgment of the student's ideas.
Tips
Nod quickly. Movement breaks in the plan never count against the student. Score each time up as met when the card came first.
Limits
A student who needs to move needs scheduled movement; this goal is about unplanned trips.

Something an adult can see, count or time.

Criterion

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

How many measurements must meet the criterion.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during independent work when they want to get up for something, the student will show the need card and wait for a nod before getting up independently in at least 5 of 6 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by frequency recording collected during one 30-minute work period a day.

Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Impulse Control & Inhibition.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
