Pause before sending a message when upset
When to use this goal
For high school students who send angry texts or messages in the moment and then deal with the fallout. Present levels decide fit. The strategy: save as a draft, wait, reread, then send, change, or delete.
- Baseline
- Talk through recent messages the student regrets and run scenarios. Data rely on the student's report. Write an operational definition first (what counts as the impulsive response and what counts as using the strategy), and teach and practice the strategy before measuring it.
- Tips
- The student chooses what to share. Score an opportunity as met when the steps were used before sending.
- Limits
- Private messages are self-reported.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when upset and about to send a text, chat, or email, the student will save the message as a draft, wait the agreed time, reread it, and then decide to send, change, or delete independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 4 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly, from the student's report and scenarios.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
