Start a timer when work begins and record the minutes worked

When to use this goal

For students with an engagement or completion goal who have no idea how long they actually worked. For students who can operate a simple timer.

Baseline
Provide the timer and log for a week and record whether the timer was started, stopped, and the minutes recorded, compared with the adult's timing. Note whether the student starts the timer and then does not start working; that is its own finding.
Tips
Each session is one opportunity. Met means all three steps done and the recorded minutes within 2 of the adult's timing. Use the log in a weekly review with the student. The timer should be silent so it does not disturb peers.
Limits
Timer running is not work happening; pair with engagement data. Some students find a visible timer stressful; use one that is easy to ignore.

Number of opportunities in which the behavior is demonstrated, out of a fixed number.

Data collection

Each planned or naturally occurring opportunity is recorded as correct/independent, prompted, or not demonstrated.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, at the start of an independent work session with a timer on the desk, the student will start the timer at the first task response, stop it at the end of the session, and record the minutes on the log independently in at least 8 of 10 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily on one session and summarized every 10 sessions.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Monitoring.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)

When are objectives required?

Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.
