Check math answers with the inverse operation
When to use this goal
For students who can add, subtract, multiply, or divide at their instructional level but hand in work with slips they never check. The student must already know the inverse relationship. Present levels decide the operation and number size.
- Baseline
- Have the student check a finished set with the inverse operation and mark each answer. Compare each mark with the key. A mark is accurate when a correct answer is checked or a wrong answer is caught. Record how many errors were caught separately from overall accuracy.
- Tips
- The score is about the student's judgment of their own answers, not the answers themselves; track computation accuracy in a math goal. Accept a calculator for the check if the team agrees the goal is checking, not computing.
- Limits
- If the inverse problem is itself computed wrong, the check fails; keep the check at a level the student computes reliably. Does not apply to estimation or word problems without extra steps.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, after finishing a set of 10 subtraction or division problems at the student's instructional level, the student will check each answer with the inverse operation in the margin and mark it with a check or an X, reworking any problem marked X independently with at least 85% accuracy on self-check marks that agree with the answer key, in 3 of 4 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Percent accuracy fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Work-sample analysis gives percent accuracy data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Self-Monitoring.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
