Underline the key words in test questions
When to use this goal
For students who answer a different question than the one asked (miss not, except, both, or explain why). The student reads the items or hears them read. Present levels, not grade, decide the item types.
- Baseline
- Review two recent tests and mark items answered off target (a list when the question asked for one, a true statement when it asked for false). Then give a 10-item probe and score both underlining and on-target answers.
- Tips
- An item scores as correct when key words are underlined and the answer addresses them, even if the content is wrong. That keeps the measure about test-taking, not content. Score content accuracy separately.
- Limits
- Does not measure content knowledge. Students who read slowly may need extended time for the extra step.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a 10-item quiz or practice test with multiple-choice and short-answer items, the student will underline the key words in each question (such as not, except, two reasons, or explain) and answer what the underlined words ask independently with at least 85% accuracy on items with the key words underlined and an answer that matches what the question asks, on 3 of 4 consecutive quizzes, as measured by work-sample analysis collected weekly.
Baseline: 40% accuracy.

- Score only items the student attempted unless the goal defines a fixed set of items. Use the same denominator every session.
- Percent = numerator ÷ denominator × 100. Round to one decimal place.
- Record the support actually provided, even if the goal is independent performance.
