Join a center activity within one minute of the signal
When to use this goal
For children who linger, wander, or wait to be led when centers or stations open. Base the choice on whether the child can find the center and knows what to do there; a visual schedule or picture choice may be needed first.
- Baseline
- Record each center transition as one opportunity for at least a week. Mark whether the child reached a center and began using materials within 1 minute without an adult walking them over. Note whether delays happen at every transition or only when a preferred center is full.
- Tips
- Met means at a center and touching its materials in a way that fits the center within 1 minute. Standing at the center or carrying materials elsewhere does not count. Keep the number of open centers consistent during data collection.
- Limits
- Preferred centers filling up create delays that are about choice, not initiation; note those opportunities. Does not measure how long the child stays or whether play is purposeful.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, when the signal is given to move to centers or stations, the student will move to an open center and begin using its materials within 1 minute of the signal independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks of data, as measured by direct observation collected daily during center time and summarized weekly.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
