Start homework at the planned time at home

When to use this goal

For students whose present levels show homework is done late at night, rushed, or not started, and whose family can help record data. Needs a realistic planned start time agreed with the family.

Baseline
Ask the family to log the planned and actual start time for one to two weeks before setting the target. If there is no planned time yet, set one with the student and family first. Confirm the student has the materials at home.
Tips
Each school day with homework is one opportunity. Count it as met when the first task is started within 10 minutes without more than the listed support. A short, simple log (date, planned time, actual time, initials) keeps family data reliable.
Limits
Depends on the family's time and consistency; use only when they have agreed to collect data. Home data are harder to verify than school data. Pair with an in-school initiation measure.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, on school days with assigned homework, at the start time written in the planner, the student will begin the first homework task within 10 minutes of the planned start time independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weeks, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected daily on a home log and summarized weekly.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Task Initiation.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
