Write a time budget for each part of an assignment
When to use this goal
For students who spend most of a period on the first part of a task and never reach the rest. Builds on time estimation.
- Baseline
- Give three multi-part tasks with a time limit and ask the student to write minutes per part. Score whether every part has a number and the total is within 5 minutes of the available time. Also note whether the budget matches part length; a tiny part with 20 minutes shows estimation needs work.
- Tips
- Each budgeted assignment is one opportunity. Met means every part has minutes, the total is within 5 minutes of the available time, and no part has zero. Then have the student follow the budget with a timer; the follow-through can be a separate measure.
- Limits
- A good budget can be ignored; see ef-tm-004 for pacing. Assignments with unequal parts make budgeting harder; start with parts of similar size.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a multi-part assignment and the number of minutes available, the student will write a number of minutes next to each part so the total matches the time available independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive weekly probes, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected weekly.

Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.
Met: Condition. Stated.
Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.
Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.
Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.
Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.
Met: Review timeframe. Stated.
Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.
Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Time Management.
Met: Level of support. Defined.
Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.
Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
Short-term objectives (optional)
When are objectives required?Required for students on alternate assessments (34 CFR §300.320(a)(2)(ii)); some states require them for everyone.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
