Stay with the group during a community outing

When to use this goal

For students who wander from the group in stores, museums, or on walks and must be retrieved. Use observation during outings and present levels in checking in with adults to decide the distance rule.

Baseline
Divide the outing into 10-minute intervals (6 for an hour) and record for each whether the student stayed within the agreed distance without being called back. Note the places where the student left the group; displays and exits are common pull-aways.
Tips
Define the distance rule in words the student uses (within two arm lengths, in the same aisle). Count an interval as met only if no adult had to retrieve the student. Pair with a job on the outing (carrying the list) to give the student a reason to stay close.
Limits
Interval recording approximates a continuous behavior; a brief wander in a long interval is still scored as not met. Students who elope need a safety plan, not only this goal.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a community-based instruction outing in a store or public building, the student will stay within the agreed distance of the group and stop when the group stops independently in 6 of 6 opportunities, across 3 consecutive outings, as measured by direct observation collected at each outing, recorded in 10-minute intervals.

Baseline: 2 of 6 opportunities.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Community & Safety Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
