Wait at the water's edge for an adult
When to use this goal
For young students who run toward water (a pool, a splash pad, a pond on a walk) without waiting. Present levels in stopping on cue (fn-cs-020) and in waiting decide fit. Adult supervision within reach is required at all times; this goal teaches the student's part.
- Baseline
- Record the first 5 arrivals at the edge across 2 or 3 sessions, with an adult within reach. Count correct only if the student stopped at the edge without being held or called back. Safety goals need every opportunity correct, so the target is all five.
- Tips
- Mark the edge with a mat, tape, or cone. Teach the go signal and practice it often in short, fun rounds. Share the rule and the words with the family for home pools and beaches.
- Limits
- Never reduces adult supervision around water. Students who are drawn to water may need a safety plan and swim instruction beyond this goal.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, at the edge of a pool or splash pad during a swim lesson or water play, before the adult gives the go signal, the student will stop at the marked edge and wait for the adult's go signal before entering the water independently in 5 of 5 opportunities, across 3 consecutive sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected at every water activity.

- Record up to 5 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
