Stop and check at driveways on the sidewalk

When to use this goal

For students who walk in the neighborhood with staff and do not notice cars backing out of driveways or pulling out of parking lots. Present levels in stopping on cue and in walking on sidewalks decide fit. An adult walks with the student during instruction.

Baseline
Choose a route with 8 driveways and score each one: stopped, checked, and crossed when clear without a prompt. The target is every driveway, because one missed check can be the one with a car.
Tips
Teach backing-up signs (white lights, engine sound). Practice on a familiar route first. Street crossing is in fn-cs-001 and fn-cs-002.
Limits
Practice routes with few cars make it hard to see real responses. Never reduces adult supervision on walks.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a neighborhood walk with staff, at each driveway or parking lot entrance, the student will stop at the edge of each driveway, look and listen for moving cars, and cross when it is clear independently in 8 of 8 opportunities, across 3 consecutive walks, as measured by direct observation collected at every community walk.

Baseline: 2 of 8 opportunities.
