Check water temperature before a shower or bath

6-8, 9-12OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who bathe or shower on their own or are learning to, and who step in without checking the water temperature. Present levels in turning faucets and in hand sensation decide fit; students with reduced sensation in the hands need a thermometer method.

Baseline
Ask the family to note for 7 showers whether the student tested the water before stepping in, by listening and asking rather than watching. Scalds can happen in seconds, so the target is every shower.
Tips
Families can lower the water heater setting or install an anti-scald valve. Mark the safe faucet position with colored tape. Teach adjusting cold first, then hot.
Limits
Relies on family report. Students with seizures or poor balance need a bathing safety plan first.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, before every shower or bath at home, as reported by the family, the student will run the water, test it with the inside of the wrist or a bath thermometer, and adjust it before getting in independently in 7 of 7 opportunities, across 2 consecutive weeks, as measured by direct observation collected daily, reported by the family weekly.

Baseline: 2 of 7 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Direct observation gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Community & Safety Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
