Stay on the line with a dispatcher

When to use this goal

For students who start a practice emergency call well but hang up after the first answer, or put the phone down to go look. Present levels in waiting during a phone conversation decide fit. Practice uses a practice phone only, never a real emergency line.

Baseline
Run 4 practice calls and time how long the student stays on before hanging up or walking away. Score an opportunity as met only when the student stayed until the dispatcher released them. Note what pulls them away (the silence while the dispatcher types, wanting to check on the person).
Tips
Pair with fn-cs-009 and fn-cs-051 once the student can start the call. Build in pauses on the dispatcher side, since real dispatchers often go quiet while they enter information. Teach the phrase "I am still here" so the student has something to say during a pause.
Limits
Practice calls are shorter and calmer than real ones. The goal does not teach when to call; pair it with scenario practice that mixes emergencies and non-emergencies.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a practice emergency call on an unplugged phone, with a staff dispatcher who keeps asking questions for about two minutes, the student will keep the phone on and stay on the line until the dispatcher says it is all right to hang up independently in 4 of 4 opportunities, across 3 consecutive practice sessions, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected every two weeks, during practice calls.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Community & Safety Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.

Short-term objectives (optional)
