Eat lunch using utensils and a napkin
When to use this goal
For students who eat with their hands, need containers opened for them, or leave the table messy when classmates manage on their own. Use OT input on grasp and utensil adaptations and any feeding or swallowing precautions from the medical team to decide which steps to include.
- Baseline
- Observe the routine on at least 3 typical days before setting a target. Mark each step as independent (no adult prompt of any kind), completed with support (note the prompt type), or not completed. Count only independent steps toward the baseline, and note which steps are missed most often; those may need direct teaching rather than more practice. Record what foods were served; finger foods give no opportunity for the utensil step, so score it as not applicable rather than missed.
- Tips
- Check with the nurse or feeding team before any goal involving eating; this template covers the routine around eating, not chewing or swallowing. Adapted utensils count as independent when the student uses them alone. Asking for help with a package counts as independent when the student starts the request.
- Limits
- Not a feeding or swallowing goal. Observing one student in a loud cafeteria is hard; a classroom lunch table gives cleaner data but may not represent the cafeteria.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 6 of 7).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
