Heat a meal in a microwave following package directions
When to use this goal
For students in a life-skills or home-living program who can read or match numbers and are ready for appliance use with supervision nearby. Base the choice on present levels in number reading, safety awareness assessment, and the family's goals for home.
- Baseline
- Observe the routine on at least 3 typical days before setting a target. Mark each step as independent (no adult prompt of any kind), completed with support (note the prompt type), or not completed. Count only independent steps toward the baseline, and note which steps are missed most often; those may need direct teaching rather than more practice. Use the same meal type for baseline sessions; a meal with a two-stage direction (cook, stir, cook again) is harder than a single time.
- Tips
- An adult must be in the room during appliance use; independence refers to prompts, not supervision. Teach the hot-surface step with real cues (steam, a hot plate) before counting it. Check allergies and dietary needs with the family and nurse.
- Limits
- Microwaves differ in button layout; practice on more than one if the skill is meant for home. Does not cover stove or oven use, which need their own safety-focused task analyses.

Goal
By the annual IEP review date, given a frozen or refrigerated meal with microwave directions and a classroom microwave, the student will heat the meal in the microwave following the package directions, performing at least 7 of 9 steps independently, on 3 consecutive cooking sessions, as measured by a task-analysis checklist collected weekly during life-skills lessons.
Baseline: 2 of 9 steps independently.

- Write the date at the top of each session column. Mark each step I, S, or N.
- Total the number of I marks for the session. The goal counts steps completed independently (target: 7 of 9).
- Use the least intrusive prompt first and record the prompt actually needed.
