Wipe the mouth after a private cue
When to use this goal
For students who have extra saliva at the lips or chin and want to keep their face and clothes dry, and who can bring a hand or wrist to the mouth. Written with the OT or SLP and the family. Present levels in arm movement and in responding to a cue decide fit, not grade. The goal is a quick, student-led wipe, never stopping or hiding saliva.
- Baseline
- Over 3 days, count cues given and how many led to a wipe within about 10 seconds. Ask the student and family which cue feels private and respectful, and whether they prefer a wristband, a cloth, or a bandana.
- Tips
- Plan this goal with the OT or SLP and the family, and with the student's input on the cue and the cloth. Keep data private. Never remark on saliva in front of others or tie it to a reward or loss. Medical and oral-motor treatment are separate decisions for the family and health care providers.
- Limits
- Saliva varies with fatigue, posture, illness, and medication, so a hard day is not a failure. Wiping does not change how much saliva there is, and the goal never aims to reduce it.

- Record up to 10 opportunities per session, matching the goal's denominator.
- Define in advance what counts as an opportunity so every data collector records the same thing.
- Count only + marks toward the criterion unless the goal specifies prompted responses.
