Notice wetness and wipe before a cue

When to use this goal

For students who wipe well when cued and want to rely less on adults. Written with the OT or SLP and the family. Present levels in noticing wetness at the lips or chin decide fit, not grade. The goal is a quick, student-led wipe, never stopping or hiding saliva.

Baseline
Over 3 class periods, count self-started wipes and the number of times an adult would have cued. The target depends on the student's typical saliva level; set it with the OT or SLP so it reflects what keeps the student dry, not a fixed number.
Tips
Plan this with the OT or SLP and the family, and with the student's own goals. Keep data private. A count goes up as the student takes over wiping from adults; it never measures how much saliva there is.
Limits
Saliva varies with fatigue, posture, illness, and medication. The count is affected by how much saliva there is on a given day, so read it next to notes on those factors.

Number of times a defined behavior occurs during a set observation period.

Sample numbers. Replace them with the student's data.

Keep every observation the same length.

Data collection

Each occurrence of a clearly defined behavior is tallied during a fixed observation period.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, during a 20-minute class period, with a wristband or cloth within reach, the student will notice wetness at their lips or chin and wipe with their wristband or cloth independently at least 4 times per 20-minute class period, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by frequency recording collected twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 times per 20-minute class period.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Frequency fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives frequency data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Daily Living Skills.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
