Match each shoe to the correct foot

PK, K-2OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For young students who can push their feet into slip-on or Velcro shoes but often switch left and right. Fits once the student puts shoes on without help. Present levels and the OT's observation of the routine, not grade or age, decide whether this template fits.

Baseline
Record every time the student puts shoes on for one to two weeks and whether they landed on the correct feet without help. Note whether the shoes had any marker inside.
Tips
A sticker cut in half, one half in each shoe, makes a picture only when the shoes are side by side the right way. Fade the cue by using a smaller mark, then none. Score one opportunity per shoe change.
Limits
Does not cover fastening. Some shoes look the same on either foot; check that the student's shoes have a clear shape first.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when putting on shoes after nap, swimming, or a sensory break, the student will set the shoes side by side so the inside edges curve toward each other and put each on the matching foot independently in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by opportunity-by-opportunity data collected at each shoe change, at least twice weekly.

Baseline: 1 of 5 opportunities.

  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Opportunity (trial) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Dressing & Clothing Management.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
