Ask for help with a stuck fastener

K-2, 3-5OpportunitiesTemplateReview and individualize before use. How templates are made
When to use this goal

For students who freeze, cry, or walk away with a coat or pants half closed when a zipper or button sticks. The goal is a clear request, not doing the fastener alone. Present levels and the OT's observation of the routine, not grade or age, decide whether this template fits.

Baseline
For two weeks, note each time a fastener stalled and what the student did: asked, tried again, waited, or left it open. Count a request only when it comes before an adult steps in.
Tips
Accept any clear request mode, including AAC. Peers can help too; asking a classmate counts. Pair with a fastener goal if the student is also working on doing it alone.
Limits
Measures asking, not fastening. A student who never tries first may need a separate goal for attempting the fastener.

Goal

By the annual IEP review date, when a zipper, button, or snap on their clothing stays stuck after they try it, the student will go to a nearby adult or peer and ask for help with the fastener using words, a sign, or a help card before an adult offers help in at least 4 of 5 opportunities, on 4 of 5 observed days, as measured by frequency recording collected at dressing times, at least three days a week.

Measurability check11 of 11 met
  • Met: Observable behavior. Stated as an action.

  • Met: Condition. Stated.

  • Met: Unit fits the behavior. Opportunities fits this behavior.

  • Met: Explicit criterion. Number and unit stated.

  • Met: Mastery rule and schedule. Both stated.

  • Met: Method produces the metric. Frequency (event) recording gives opportunities data.

  • Met: Review timeframe. Stated.

  • Met: Baseline and target compatible. Same unit, change in the right direction.

  • Met: Aligned with area of need. Still about Dressing & Clothing Management.

  • Met: Level of support. Defined.

  • Met: Blanks filled in. Nothing left to fill in.

Checks structure and wording only. Whether the goal fits the student is the team's call.
